GPT-6 Astra for Coding
Where Astra’s long context, reasoning controls and tool support fit software engineering work — and where cost still matters.
Best-fit coding work
Astra is aimed at difficult repository-scale tasks, debugging, migrations, tool-assisted development and long-running work that benefits from persistent context. Its supported Responses API tools include hosted shell and apply patch, which are directly relevant to coding agents.
What the benchmark signal says
OpenAI reports 57.9% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, versus 37.3% for GPT-5.6 Sol in the comparison it publishes. That is encouraging for terminal-heavy tasks, but repository performance still depends heavily on the agent harness, context selection, tools and verification loop.
Use Astra selectively
At $10/M standard input and $50/M output, Astra is expensive enough that routing matters. A lower-cost model can handle easy edits and classification, while Astra can be reserved for complex refactors, root-cause analysis, multi-step migrations and tasks where a failed attempt is more expensive than the model bill.
